Stage 4 - Transfer of Power
Those who supported the revolution gained power and began to make changes. On August 4, 1789 - The National Assembly passed laws ending serfdom and feudalism - “Liberty, equality, fraternity” became the slogan of the times - They wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen - Called for the creation of a limited power monarchy During 1789-1792 Royal family was caught during an escape in 1790 Church lands were confiscated and sold to pay extraordinary public debt Radicals called for death of the king and nobles Ideas were discussed in political clubs like Paris’ Jacobin Club Many parts of country periodically erupted into chaos The assembly gave up the idea of limited monarchy and dissolved the legislature They renamed themselves the National Convention and depose the king |
Stage 5 - Civil War
War between the old and new regime. People in the old regime did not want the revolution, and the new regime wants power and change. On the Summer of 1792 Austria (then led by Marie Antoinette’s brother) threatened to war with France The actions of the lower classes in France have nobles throughout Europe nervous Britain and Prussia soon joined in the fight The National Assembly won and officially dissolved the monarchy and declared France a republic France during the time of war
