Consequences of the Revolution
Positive
- The monarchy ended - New rulers were chosen by the people and were often intellectuals who actually had an understanding of how the country worked and what they could do to improve it. - Gained religious tolerance - The Bourgeois and landowning classes emerged as the dominant power - Unified France and enhanced the power of the national state - Tore down the ancient structure of Europe and hastened the advent of nationalism, and introduced the era of modern, total warfare |
Negative
- It was later on taken over by napoleon who deemed himself the "supreme ruler" of france and lead the country back into a similar ruling as before the revolution.- There was a complete collapse of the economy as the country operated on obligations and debts. - The violence throughout the revolution lead to the death of hundreds of thousands of citizens. - Regions were depopulated and cities were destroyed. - The revolution was negatively taken by the rest of Europe and France was dragged into 25 years of coalition war. |
